Succession management is a structured organizational process that involves the formal identification and preparation of potential successors to assume new leadership roles. Effective succession planning involves internal leadership development and assignment-based learning experiences that prepare candidates for advancement to new leadership roles. Succession management capabilities help organizations diagnose their employee's advancement potential, and provide planned leadership development activities to groom high-potential employees for vacancies in senior leadership positions.
Developed and validated by Dr. Kevin Groves, the Succession Management Capabilities (SMC) framework captures three integrated sets of evidence-based executive succession practices and associated performance outcomes: Enabling, Assessment, and Transition Capabilities. HR leaders and executive teams may utilize the Succession Management Capabilities framework to design an effective succession planning program for their respective organizations.

Dr. Kevin S. Groves, Ph.D., is President of Groves Consulting Group, LLC, and Professor of Management at Pepperdine University’s Graziadio Business School. The consultancy supports businesses, non-profit organizations, and public agencies with leadership and organization development solutions, including customized 360-degree assessment tools, leadership development program design and facilitation, succession planning systems, executive team development, strategic planning facilitation, and a range of training solutions. As a Professor of Management at the Graziadio Business School, Dr. Groves teaches a range of doctoral and master’s level courses including executive leadership, organization design and strategic alignment, and organization development and change. An active leadership scholar, Dr. Groves’ recently published book (Winning Strategies: Building a Sustainable Leadership Pipeline through Talent Management & Succession Planning) offers executive teams, boards, consultants, and HR/OD professionals a practical framework and set of succession planning and talent management best practices. Prior to his academic career, Dr. Groves worked as a management consultant in the Strategy & Organization practice at Towers Perrin (now Willis Towers Watson).
